Next to shelter, water is the next thing to focus on in a survival situation. Aside from actually finding it, the most important thing is making sure it’s safe to drink. After going a long time without water, diving face first into a source of water, no matter how inviting it looks, is probably a recipe for disaster. All it takes is something as simple as brushing your teeth with contaminated water, or even getting it in your eyes, to set you up for days of being sick, possibly with diarrhea, which is pretty bad in the best of times, but when all you’ve got to clean yourself with is leaves, it’s just a step in the wrong direction to say the least.
What makes it even worse is how easy it could have been to avoid. Water purification tablets, a portable purifier, or even boiling, when done for 1/2 to 1 hour in length, depending on which method you use, is normally more than enough to make most contaminated water safe to drink. The main exceptions to this is water that is contaminated with a poison, like arsenic or something similar, or just plain nasty, polluted water. With the right equipment, however, even the horribly polluted water can be made safe to drink.
I hope to have pages here that shows how to find, store, and purify said water to help you stay alive one day longer when the cards are down and not in your favor.
