Survival..... when someone talks about it, do you immediately envision a situation straight out of the TV show Lost©?  Or do you think about all the people that died or lost their homes/possessions in New Orleans?

I personally take a much broader view of what it means.  To me, survival is making it through another day.  Yes, it’s a very broad view, but not without merit.  Survival could mean something as simple as not giving in to road rage if someone cuts you off because you never know if that person is unstable and quite possibly capable of injuring/killing you.

It could also mean what steps you take if you break down on the side of the road, or you see someone broken down.  If you’re so inclined to stop to help, which I normally do, how you approach the situation could mean the possibility of helping someone out in need, or it could put your life in jeopardy if the person really isn’t broken down and they’re hoping to prey on a good hearted person.  These are areas where people lose their lives every day, and usually because of a lack of awareness.

A lot of what survival is all about is awareness and mindset.  I’ve spent years studying how to become more aware of my surroundings.  One of my main hobbies is in the field of accelerative learning, and part of what goes into that is learning how to alter your perspective and awareness levels.  That being said, the only way to get good at something is to practice it.  So I plan on adding mental and physical exercises that have helped me be safer and more aware of my environment.  I’ll also provide links if you want to pursue the topic in question more in depth.

I’m hoping some of the suggestions I make here will help you become more aware of your surroundings, how to position yourself to be the safest you can possibly be under the circumstances, and possibly how to react properly if you find yourself in the wrong place at the wrong time.
