I’m by no means an expert in survivalism, but I’m not a neophyte either. I’m a former Marine that served for 4 years. Now while I didn’t go into any war zones, ( even though I enlisted during the desert shield/storm timeframe, the fighting ended before I ever graduated boot camp), I did think it was a good idea to figure out how to survive out in the wild in case I was ever forced into such circumstances.
Growing up, I was pretty skilled with a 22LR rifle, sling shot, pellet gun, and throwing knives. I’ve since become rusty at most of those skills, but with what’s happening in the world today, I’ve decided to get my skills back up to par. My time in the Marines taught me how to be a better marksman, the importance of being prepared, how to ration food (never my favorite), and how to tough it out no matter what the circumstances are.
Unfortunately, most people who are interested in these types of topics are usually looked at with a suspicious eye during good times (oh, look at the survival nut), and the source of all evil during bad times because we have the forethought to plan ahead for something that might never happen (bet that survival nut has lots of food that they’d love to share with us), i.e. a natural disaster. Or they feel that since you have “plenty” of food/water/fuel/etc, that you should be obligated to share with them in their time of need. I’m not saying that you should or shouldn’t help them, what I’m saying is it should be your own choice to do so. If people know you have stockpiled supplies, they’re going to try and take that choice away, possibly by force. With all this being said, if you’re going to start stockpiling supplies, you need to keep it low key and not talk to other people about it unless you really trust them and don’t mind the possibility of them showing up at your doorstep if it hits the fan.
I’ve lived/survived through several natural disasters when I lived in North Carolina, so I’ve seen how people act during such events. I’ve sheltered at my trailer (stupid idea in hindsight) during several category 3 and 4 hurricanes. I was also down there during the worst flood NC has seen in 100 years. I remember Greenville, NC being and island that nobody could get to or leave from due to the height of the flood waters. I’ve also gone through blizzards and sand storms. I remember getting snowed in for several days when I was younger and was part of the hurricane team in the Marines (we prep’d the base for hurricane landfall. Lots of duct tape everywhere)
I’ve tried my hand at eating wild plants, some good, some bad, but something that I know I need to focus on more. Given all that, I know I still have a lot to learn. This website is going to be my method of sharing the information that I’m going to learn over the coming months and years, and I hope that it proves informative and helpful to someone else out there. Where practical, I’ll also post links to books, equipment, and suppliers I feel are important or might be helpful to further your education, as it has mine.
So sit back and browse the site. I hope to add new information on a regular basis, most likely on a weekly basis as I usually have one day off a week for practicing this field of endeavor.
